** In the past hominid referred to humans and their ancestors.  Other apes were placed into the Anthropoids which included chimps, gorillas and orangutans.  However, recent molecular genetics indicates that chimps, gorillas and humans are more closely related to each other than orangutans.  Currently there is much flux in taxonomic names since traditional names based on morphology do not match the molecular, and many suggest, true evolutionary history.  Thus, many taxonomists argue that chimps, gorillas, orangutans, and humans should be grouped together as hominids and a new category, hominin refers only to the bipedal apes past and present. Since the terms are currently in transitional use, you can encounter both terms where some authors refer to the traditional use of hominid which is equivalent to the present use of hominin!
