At a conference with my youngest daughter there was ample time for her to do some swimming.  The days were still a little cool and after an afternoon in the water we left our hotel room to go out to dinner that night.   As we walked by the pool,  she dipped her hand in the water and mentioned with glee that the water was warmer than during the day and she was happy that the hotel was doing that for its guests.  I asked her if there could be another explanation and she seemed very puzzled.  Well, it did  seem warmer; it's true that it felt warmer than she remembered earlier in the day.  But of course she was being fooled by the change in the relative temperature differences between the air and water at two different time periods.  But it felt true to her and I'm sure it felt intuitive to her as well.  And so it is with us.  It feels  like we are not moving although the earth is spinning at 1,000 miles per hour at the equator, traveling around the sun at 67,000 mph, and circling the center of the our galaxy at about 500,000 mph.  It appears  that the earth is flat and that the sun and moon rotate around us.*** And it seems that our universe and life is designed and that things are too complex to have arisen by natural means. We need to acknowledge these feelings and erroneous observations that run very deep, often have emotions attached to them, and seem intuitive.  Unfortunately, incorrect conclusions  like these can become a hindrance sometimes for those seeking truth.   As Dobzhansky has said:

No evidence is powerful enough to force acceptance of a conclusion

 that is emotionally distasteful.

Another way of looking at how we should approach topics that are not intuitive may be to examine pilot instrument training.  When pilots are trained to use their instrumentation they are often put into simulators or under actual flying conditions that purposely disorientate them.  If they trust their perceptions they could die in a crash; they can literally fly into the ground or into a mountain thinking they are fine.   However, if they trust their instruments, even when their perceptions or emotions tell them the opposite,  they will have an accurate synthesis of the situation and 'fly right'.  As science has progressed, we have developed better and better instruments that often tell us things that are not intuitive and may conflict with our beliefs.  Rather than reject the data, we need to confirm it and if it is true, we should modify or reject any beliefs we have that are shown to be false if we are honest and consistent with ourselves.

Evolution is not intuitive, but then neither are those things discussed above. If all we do is stop at a first level of observation and feeling we can miss out on great truths.  The ancients continued to make observations, of masts on ships where only the tops could be seen when far from shore, of longer lengths of shadows of tall objects further away from the equator, of curved shadows during eclipses, etc.  One can dismiss these anomalies to one's beliefs about the world as "I don't know" or "It's not my expertise", or "It's a mystery", or a decision can be made to dig deeper and try to understand why a belief we may hold is inconsistent with a growing body of reliant knowledge.

In the last few decades, new discoveries in science, especially the DNA sequencing of multiple species, has confirmed evolutionary theory and its predictions in a spectacular way.  It is no longer acceptable to be agnostic or antagonistic towards this grand unifying scientific theory of biology just as it is unacceptable to reject the theories of gravity, relativity or cell theory.  Patterns in our DNA present to us another "fossil record" of our past and it can be read as a history book. A history of our species and life  around us (Link, this site "Journey of Man").  It is an exciting time to be alive and to have the privilege to glimpse into our past and know much of the how, why,  and when the stars,  planets,  and life originated.

*** Well,  some still say this actually is true.  "Galileo Was Wrong: The Church Was Right", 2007,  1057 pp.

Product Description (Amazon)

Galileo Was Wrong is a detailed and comprehensive treatise that demonstrates from the scientific evidence that heliocentrism (the concept that the Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun) is an unproven scientific theory; and that geocentrism (the view that the Earth is in the center of the universe and does not move by either rotation or revolution) is not only supported by the scientific evidence but is admitted to be a logical and viable cosmology by many of the world's top scientists, including Albert Einstein, Ernst Mach, Edwin Hubble, Fred Hoyle and many more.

Scientific evidence available to us within the last 100 years that was not available during Galileo's confrontation shows that the Church's position on the immobility of the Earth is not only scientifically supportable, but it is the most stable model of the universe and the one which best answers all the evidence we see in the cosmos.
